Popular comedienne, Oluwadamilola Adekoya, aka Princess’ marriage crashed barely one month after it was contracted. The celebrity wedding (to Adeshola Jeremiah) had the wife of Lagos State Governor, Dame Abimbola Fashola and other top shots in attendance. YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine’s GBENGA SHABA ran into her on Friday, October 31, 2014, at the Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, Lagos where she revealed some things that were hitherto unknown about the failed union and more…
What have you been doing lately?
I’ve been busy. I was out of the country for a while to work. This MC work has been taking me everywhere, to anchor events, most especially weddings. So, I just got back.
Despite all the challenges you faced recently, how do you still get motivated?
It’s basically because I love to entertain; because it has always been my dream from childhood and about 13 years ago I discovered that I could be a good comedienne. I used to do comic acting when I was in school and with the support of my friends and family, I was able to accomplish my dream. It’s been a very short journey because I started between 2001 and 2002.
What does it take to be a good comedienne?
You have to be original and be ready to be a trail blazer. Don’t copy anybody, just go out there and give your best all the time. Be creative all the time.
What do you think stands you out?
It’s because I’m the most beautiful comedienne in Nigeria and in the whole of Africa. I’m the artiste with the most infectious smile. It’s not easy to have all that criteria.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Well, one or two, when I was starting out. But most of the time when it happened, I didn’t see it as embarrassment because when I started travelling outside the country, I met people who desired to be affiliated with me, pray for me, assist me and appreciate what I do. So, I feel grateful.
Your tomboy attitude has changed, what happened? You are not on jeans tonight…
I changed because Nigerians were complaining that I dress like a tomboy. A lot of industry people also do complain, so I’m trying to change that perception. But up till now, I can’t wear high heels because it’s little by little. You guys should just be patient with me and within a short time, I will start wearing heels.
How does it feel wearing a short gown tonight?
I’m not too comfortable, but I will just try for my fans, because they want to see me in a different light. So, I will try. I’ve been to two or three events now and I wore gowns; people really loved it. They told me it’s nice.
So, is that the end of jeans and trousers for Princess?
No, I am not changing. But just like I said, everybody needs to evolve, you need to be dynamic. People know me with jeans and blazers all the time. Anywhere I’m going, all around the world; but my fans have started saying that they think I will look nice and better on gowns. So, a fan bought this one for me in US and I didn’t even try it on until today and I’m very graceful in it. They are the one feeding me now, because they buy my CDs, come for my shows and listen to me and buy my ring back tones and also patronize me everywhere I go. So, for them asking me to change is not too big a demand to make. They needed a little bit of change and this doesn’t change me, because I’m still myself. But it is just that I’m embracing a new mode of dressing.
Ever since your marriage broke up, how have you been coping?
Like I always tell my people, really, marriage is the best institution and even well recognized by God and very interesting and sweet. But in my case that ended abruptly, I don’t think it is the end of the world. I believe that God has a reason for everything. As long as I’m still alive, I believe that when there is life, there’s hope. I was a bit down like every other human being, I felt sad, because this was my first and I hoped to live ever happily after. But with help of prayers, my family and friends’ support, I’ve been able to embrace life and move on. I thank God.
Was it actually because you didn’t know him well that made the marriage to collapse, because he once said he spent more time with you on locations and always monitored you before you agreed to marry him?
No; not really. It was just the way God wanted it, but I don’t want to dwell on it because I’ve moved on.
So, was the fault from you or him?
Like I said, I don’t want to dwell on it because it’s now my past and I’ve moved on.
Are you planning to start another relationship?
I don’t know. I’m not done now! It is me and my work for now.
What of if the right man comes your way now?
Ha! Plenty people have been coming from all over the world since the first day my marriage broke up. Even Chinese men too. I don’t know. I don’t understand, because it is like they’ve googled and watched my videos and a lot of them have also read about my marriage break up and they will tell me that they had wanted to marry me o! It’s so surprising that even someone who is a Chinese and couldn’t speak English fluently would tell me he has interest, but I always ask myself where I would start from. A lot of people from all over the world. I just appreciate them and thank them for asking me out, but I made them understand that I want to face my work for now and improve on my art and become a better professional in my chosen field and like I said, wait for what God has in stock for me. But for now, I’m not thinking about marriage.
What are you working on now?
I’m rebranding myself. I want to make the brand, Princess more accessible all over the world. I’m doing this most especially on websites and I’m also trying to polish my art to make it better so that my fans would appreciate it anytime I’m putting on a show.
