Nigeria’s former civilian President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, is dead.
He was aged 93. And gave up the ghost at the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was undergoing treatment.
The President of Nigeria between 1979 and 1983, his government was toppled on December 31 by Muhammadu Buhari who did not only accus him and his lieutenants of monumental corruption, but also clamped them in detention.
Most likely to be buried today, in accordance with the Islamic tradition, he started out as a teacher and initially wanted to be a senator until he was drafted into the presidential race which he eventually won on the ticket of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN.
