5 SECRETS OF MAKING MONEY FROM BOOK WRITING – Olumide Emmanuel
Mr. Olumide Emmanuel is endowed with a lot of gifts. He is a motivational speaker, wealth creation expert, best selling author, astute businessman, minister of the gospel and more. Hugely successful and sought-after at 42, the founder of Calvary Bible Church and MD/CEO of Common Sense Group spoke exclusively to YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, AZUH ARINZE, on his new book, The School Of Money. The interesting session which held on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at their new corporate office on Ajanaku Street, in Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos is served below and exactly the way you would love it.
Okay! In 2007, I wrote a book called How To Be A Millionaire, which was later re-titled Pathway To Wealth, and that was written as a result of wanting to make wealth creation principles available to people, especially changing their paradigm with reference to wealth creation and with the result that that book brought to bear, because immediately after the book was written, the entire world went into a recession and that helped the book to become more valuable than it probably would have been because people now saw the importance of a material like that. Then, in the last five years, by virtue of the success of the platforms opened up to me all over the world, I’ve been able to speak in a lot of universities, speak to a lot of parliaments, politicians, consulted for a lot of corporations and companies and even nations and that global exposure and a lot of other things I’ve learnt in the last five years have necessitated the need to bring people up to speed with the new information that they need when it comes to the issue of wealth creation. I’ve always said over the years that if you are not informed, you will deformed; if you are not inspired, you will expire; if you are not updated, you will be outdated. Yesterday’s information is not enough for today’s responsibilities and challenges, so I felt that it was time to bring out necessary valuable tools that will help them to really be able to create wealth, especially as we are about to exit the global crisis and enter into a new realm of opportunities. So, that’s why the book was written as a manual for wealth creation. So that people will be able to know how to make, manage and multiply their money and then so that it can become a one-stop centre for entrepreneurship. If you want to build a business and succeed, everything about entrepreneurship is in there. So, it’s also more like an entrepreneur’s blueprint. That’s why it was written.
How long did it take you to write the book?
Well, it took me five weeks to write it. I always hear people say they’ve been writing a book for one year, two years, three years and I don’t understand. Maybe there’s something they know that I don’t know. But for me, I don’t think I have what it takes to be writing one book for three years. I will lose focus or lose track, so what I always do is whenever I receive any idea or gather materials, I begin to sample the information. So, I speak about it in different platforms all over the world to be able to gain or test the pulse of the people and see whether the information you are about to write on is relevant. And so for this particular book, I’ve been doing wealth creation now for about 20 years. But in the last five years, after the release of the last book in 2007, I already made up my mind that in every five years I will see what I can do again in the area of wealth creation. Then, every year, I will release something on relationships – since that’s also another major area. So, I had in mind that in another five years I will do something. But it was actually in early last year that I took off. But in the last five years I had been gathering the materials. When I read an article or I read a book and I see a story or I see some new concepts, I will say oh, that’s nice, that one is not in that former book, people don’t have this one, so I will put it aside. I have a folder and I put all those things there. So, it was actually last year, I think around March/April, that I was now like, now is the time. So, all I did was in January, I went back to that folder, brought out all the things I had put together over the years, then sat down on it and in five weeks I was through.
People find it difficult to read in Nigeria and here you have a book that is over 700 pages, what strategies have you lined up to ensure that they read this book?
I don’t actually agree with the fact that people find it difficult to read. We always say there’s a poor reading culture. In fact, I really don’t agree with that because that is what we are publicizing. There are a lot of people that read. The question now is, do they read what they are supposed to read? Because people are compelled to read books when they are in school; when they have to pass exams they are compelled to read books. So, if they can be compelled to read and pass an exam; if they really have vision for their lives and their future, that vision and dream for a better future should also compel them to develop themselves. So, I believe that apart from people that cannot read or write, we have a lot of people that can read. For instance, in Lagos, we have about 15-18 million people. So, even if we say people that can’t really read, I’m concentrating more on those that are willing, those that are ready. I know that there are millions of people out there that need this kind of information and those are the people I’m targeting.
Why should everybody or anyone buy a copy of The School Of Money?
Because it will help them without doubt. I’ve attached a money back guarantee to the book because I’m sure of what it offers. In the last five years, after the release of the last book, we’ve been privileged to raise over 300 millionaires; over a thousand people have become land owners and some of them home owners. People that their grandfathers never smelt a plot of land, people that generationally, they are a generation of tenants. I’ve been able to help millions of people gain financial intelligence. So, what we are putting in there are useable, practical result-oriented information. Because if you really look at wealth creation, whether it’s success or wealth creation or anything about life, the principles are universal. There is no new principle you really want to share. But when you look at the universal principle, there has to be a cultural contextualization of those information. People read books from all the giants of wealth creation and success all over the world, but they don’t know how to practice it because they are in Africa and they see a lot of terminologies and a lot of examples that don’t relate to them in their own culture. This is a book written by an African that is a global player. So, he has the global relevance and the local understanding and results. So, it’s a book that will help us more as Africans, and beyond the universality of the principles. So, everybody needs to get the book because it will help them, and it is a manual for life; hard cover. It’s something that you have to refer to over and over again. So, even if you are a conglomerate, you are a multi-national, you need the information there to still continue to move to the next dimension of your operations.
You have Gordons and Helen Paul as the brand ambassadors, why did you choose them?
I chose the two of them because when I was writing the book… I’m also a pastor and when I wrote the last book, I concentrated more on the church. I wanted to help change the mind set of church members and church people, especially men of God and pastors that have this full time ministry mentality and they are just concerned about getting money from the people. Now, I concentrated more on the entire nation. So, it’s not a Christian book or a Bible. It’s a book on wealth creation and I want it to be able to hit the educational world, hit the political world, hit the nation in a new dimension. So, I knew that in order to do that, I needed to bring in a lot of leverages. So, I felt in order to publicise it, let me get in touch with a lot of corporate bodies. That’s why we brought in Sweet Sensation so that they will market it. It’s also available at MMIA 2. Then, let’s look for ambassadors since comedy and music are well received. Let’s use also the leverage of comedy, or leverage of music or leverage of celebrities to be able to push the message and that’s why I thought okay, let me get some musicians or some comedians. But in doing a research about the musicians and comedians, I discovered that a lot of people have issues. And by the time you bring this one, there is one controversy and so on. And I didn’t want to bring people’s baggage into this. So, I wanted to choose people that do not have negative publicity and these two people fit into that bill and we also have the same beliefs about life, because I also didn’t want to bring people on board where you are trying to do something and they have some attitude or character that may contradict my own beliefs. That’s why we chose them, because I believe they are also good brands in the market.
What makes a best selling author?
There are five keys to becoming a best selling author. If a book is going to become a best seller, the five things you need to look at are No1, the content of the book; No 2, the quality of the book; No 3, the title of the book; No 4, the price of the book and No 5, the author of the book. These are the five things that will determine what a best selling author will be able to do. Because there are best writers, but they don’t become best sellers. Now, if you are starting out as an author and you want to be a best selling author, these are the five things you need to note: the author, the price, the content, the title and the quality. When I started out over 20 years ago, I knew that truth. So, this thing, I’ve known it for over 20 years and I knew that as an author my name was not known 20 years ago. So, for the author, I gave myself zero. The content, I was the only one that knew the content. People were not yet knowledgeable about what I could offer. So, for the content, I also gave myself zero. Now, if I already had zero out of five, I knew that I had to do everything about the three. So, I made up my mind that the quality, the title and the price must be right. In Nigeria, go anywhere, in the last 20 years, do your research, my books are No 1 when it comes to quality. I’m in the grade A of quality. I’m in the Grade A of title. When you see the titles of my books, they will touch you. I’m in the grade A of pricing. Why? Because I knew then that if I can score three over five, it can give me a leverage. I’m also in grade A as a best selling author in this country. In fact, that is my secret. Three over five. And as the three were going, people were seeing that that book is good, and by the time the next one came, it was still the same thing. So, over the years, the content and the name clicked. Right now, there are a lot of people that still don’t know who Olumide Emmanuel is. But because I’ve crossed to that level where I know that the five are working for me in different sectors, it’s now time for me to move to another level. So, in 2007, with the book, Pathway To Wealth, my books now became expensive. Pathway to Wealth was the book with which I said now I’m going to place a value on myself. And this new book, that’s why I said it’s N5000. If you can’t afford it, leave it! I’m no more on that level. If it was before, I would have probably sold it for N3,000.
What is the best way to go about writing a book? The easiest way or simplest way?
You need to find out whether the market is there first. What you want to write about, are there people that want to read it? Because you need to start with the end in mind. Begin with the market. Is there a market for this your information. If the market is there, what do they want? Because you are writing for a particular audience. What do the people want? What is the thing that will excite them? What is the thing that will bless them? What is the thing that will impact them? When you get all that, that is what will determine how. Because you don’t write to please yourself, you don’t write to excite yourself, you write to meet a market demand and once you do that, your writing should be to solve a problem, to offer information, offer relief or education and that’s the way it goes.
Why do most people lack the concentration required to write a book?
It’s a function of a lot of things. For instance, I’m strong in a lot of areas, I’m also weak in a lot of areas. So, if it is not their strong point, it’s not just there, because we need to understand that for instance, for me, there are some things that I do with ease and there are some things that people do with ease that I can’t even do. So, for many people, it may not be their strong point, and if it is not their strong point, there’s nothing we can do about that. No 2, they may not have passion for something. You can’t pursue what you don’t have passion for. So, if there is no passion, it can’t happen. No. 3, a lot of people have not been motivated or mentored to do it. I have a lot of friends and most of my friends have written books because of me. I pastor a church. Most of my pastors have written books because of me, but if they are in a place where the pastor doesn’t write books or their friends don’t write, it may not be so. So, motivation and mentoring can also help. I think those are the reasons.
Besides the Bible, which is the greatest book that you have read?
Whaaoh! I don’t think only one book will qualify for that. I’ve read a lot of books when it comes to different aspects of life. When it comes to ministry, one of the greatest books that I read and that really impacted me is God’s General. And Evangelism by Fire. I’ve also read a lot of other books: The Purpose-Driven Church. All manners of books. When it comes to other aspects of life, one book that I’ve read that affected me a lot is Multiple Streams of Income, then The Rich Dad series. A lot of those books have impacted me.
After The School Of Money, what should people expect next?
Well, The School Of Money is the major project we are doing right now and we already have a monthly school we run, which is a free school. We also have a weekly school we run, which is also free. Later in the year, we are going to do a one-week intensive course. Depending on the way that goes, we hope to make it a yearly thing, so that once a year or twice a year, people can have a place they can go to. Because one of the things we want to do is not just to teach people, but to also empower them. Because, most people, the problem they have is always money, money, money…So, when they come, we want to be able to give grants. When people do well, we give them money to start their businesses. We are planning to do that next year. The next thing for us majorly is the media. That’s what we have been working towards for a while now. To really go into the media. We’ve been on radio, we’ve been on TV, but we want to take it to the next level and really be out there. We want to get into the media big time – both TV, radio, with all our messages and all our information. Then, next year also, we are going to focus a lot on relationships. We are going to release about 20 CDs on relationships. And that is going to be the first time we will come out with that. So, once that is out, we are going to start another movement in relationship – The New Rules of Love Campaign, all over the country. We are working on a whole lot of things.
