The people of Taraba State now have a new Governor – and she is Alhaja Jummai Alhassan, one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees.
The Governor, Mr. Darius Ishaku, was today kicked out by The Taraba Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja. The former had alleged irregularities after the election which produced the latter. And thus headed to the Tribunal, which has now ruled in her favour.
Alhassan belongs to All Progressives Congress, APC, while Ishaku belongs to People’s Democratic Party, PDP. Expectedly, it’s been mixed feelings in their camps – Alhassan’s people are rejoicing while Ishaku’s are not.
The Tribunal’s ruling will no doubt be challenged. But until then, Taraba people have a new Governor. Alhassan, if eventually she is allowed to continue, will jump into the club of very few women who have been privileged to govern a State. In that class is Dame Virgy Etiaba who administered Anambra State following the impeachment of Gov. Peter Obi then, until it was reversed by the Court.
