The Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, must be one of the happiest men in the world right now – and the reason is this: Nigeria’s apex court, the Supreme Court, just upheld his election as the democratically elected Governor of the State.
Wike contested on the ticket of PDP, while his strongest opponent, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, ran on the ticket of APC. This was on April 11, 2015. The former enjoyed the support of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience while the latter relied heavily on the former Governor of the State, Rotimi Amaechi.
According to the Supreme Court, their reason(s) for asking Wike, a former Minister of State for Education and Amaechi’s erstwhile Chief of Staff to ‘carry go’, like we say in Pidgin English, will be supplied on February 12.
Wike’s election, it would be recalled, had earlier been nullified by the Appeal Court. Now, the Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the land, has upturned that. Meaning that Wike will serve out his 4-year term as Rivers Governor. Celebration has been going on in his camp unlike Dakuku’s which is in shock and disbelief.
More details soon.
