Nigeria’s Under 17 National Team, The Golden Eaglets, last night in Vina Del Mar, Chile, mauled their Malian counterparts by 2 goals to nil.
The goals were slotted in by Victor Oshimhen and Funsho Bamgboye.
The team, coached by ex Super Eagles player and one time African Footballer of the Year, Emmanuel Amuneke, would have cruised to victory with 3 goals, but lost an opportunity to maximize a penalty kick awarded against the Malians in the early minutes of the game.
This is the fifth time time the Golden Eaglets are winning the cup. Incidentally, the first time was under Buhari as a military ruler. And now as a democratically elected leader. President Muhammadu Buhari, it would be recalled, had spoken to the players and their officials hours before the match, encouraging them to bring home the cup. This, we learnt, really, really boosted their confidence and also injected so much joy into the camp, and with all of them vowing not to let him down, no matter what. Another thing is the boys’ dedication and determination to make a name for themselves as well as do Nigeria proud. The coach’s competence equally contributed immensely, said one of our sources.
