Ambassador Nurain MumuniFormer governorship candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Lagos State, Ambassador Nurain Mumuni, has identified corruption and deficient security agencies as the major causes of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Speaking recently at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Annual Conference Dinner in Abuja, Mumuni disclosed that Nigerians should not expect a miracle from a corrupt society that is being protected by the military that has suffered gross deficiency over the years.
“Suddenly, our highly respected military officers caved in to corruption. And virtually all the military personnel that were to tackle the criminal activities of Boko Haram were busy feasting fat on the lingering massacre of innocent Nigerians.
Overnight, they all became millionaires without bothering over what was going on within the area of their primary responsibilities. They kept lying to Nigerians; and no one knew the appropriate position of things. In a situation like this, how do we expect positive results.
”How do you expect Nigeria, as a nation whose military is ill-equipped and corrupt due to bad government and maladministration to protect her citizens against the onslaught of Boko Haram terrorists that started as a  rag-tag group, a nation that encourages corruption with impunity; a nation where the police cannot apprehend a common criminal and the Immigration cannot differentiate between citizens and foreigners may just be sliding towards a failed state.
“Nigeria has been reduced to a country where virtually all the civil servants are more concerned about what they get into their pocket through manipulation of government mechanism and the positions entrusted to them by the generality of Nigerians. Nigeria has been reduced to a country where all the known high profile criminals in the land hob nob with highly placed public office holders.”
Mumuni however praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts at taking Nigeria’s military agencies back to the path of sanity and honour.
“I’m most impressed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s performance so far. To a very large extent, within a short period of his administration, he has proved his worth as a patriotic Nigerian leader who is out to serve all Nigerians irrespective of their geo-political zone and political affiliation.”
