A group, Free Lagos, an assembly of supporters of Jimi Agbaje, governorship candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP in Lagos State, has condemned in very strong terms, the continuous attacks on Agbaje and his interests in the run-up to the general elections. It also criticized the incessant violence, intolerance, intimidation and politics of bitterness that have now gripped Lagos ahead of the coming elections.
Reacting to yesterday’s vicious attack on Agbaje in Iba, Lagos, shortly after leaving the palace of Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni, the group called for restraint and caution. It wondered why Agbaje has been singled out for persistent attacks since he launched his governorship campaign last December.
The group also recalled the earlier attacks and destruction of Agbaje’s posters and billboards, an ugly development that has continued unabated. “How can a man who is civility-personified, a candidate that preaches peace and harmony be subjected to unwarranted and continuous fierce attacks even in his own state?”, the group queried.
Yesterday’s brutal attack on Agbaje’s convoy, Free Lagos believes, is unacceptable and the height of thoughtlessness and intolerance which now reign supreme in Lagos State.
It called on politicians in Lagos State to rein in their violent supporters who are hell bent on frustrating Agbaje and creating unnecessary political crisis that will not do anyone any good.
The group warned that if nothing is not done urgently to reassure citizens and guarantee freedom, people in Lagos State may be forced to resort to self-help and this, they believe, will be counterproductive.
Free Lagos also re-echoed Agbaje’s great potentials as a thoroughbred professional and gentle man who has pursued his political ambition and aspiration to govern Lagos State with calmness and utmost civility. The group also described the PDP governorship candidate as a role model and praised him for remaining calm even in the face of daily provocation and assault that are now taking a frightening dimension.
The PDP candidate, who is driving his campaign on the twin principles of freedom and democracy, has promised to guaranty liberty, openness, inclusion and the protection of citizens’ rights and freedom. Agbaje, a candidate who continues to preach peace, good neighborliness, freedom of association and love among Lagosians, insists that violence and cronyism are evils that every lover of Lagos State must fight to a standstill for the state to move forward.
This is also the view of Free Lagos group and it has asked the people of Lagos State to support Agbaje who is poised to reforming and totally addressing the growing intolerance, aggression and violence that are fast taking over reason and political persuasion in the politics of Lagos State.
