A Birthday in Captivity: 449 Days After #RescueLeahSharibuNow!

Leah Sharibu is 16 years old today, held captive since the past 449 days by the Boko Haram Terror group. It was reported that her refusal to jettison her religious practice led to her non-release when others regained freedom consequent upon some negotiations between government and the terrorists.

WA wishes Leah Sharibu a happy birthday and a quick release from captivity. Hers is a testimony of faith and resilience.

We demand more accountability from government on issues of child protection and friendliness. Leah Sharibu and the case of Chibok girls, who remain perpetually in captivity since 2014 give indications that Nigeria itself may have become a giant prison of a sort for her children.

We demand that government takes steps that will ensure immediate rescue of all children being held captive anywhere in the world.

Any further day Leah spends in captivity dents the credibility of Nigeria in the Assembly of civilised nations.
Whatever negotiation that led to the release of her colleagues should be reactivated now.
