85-Yr-Old Awujale Of Ijebuland Reels Out How His Successor Must Be Selected “When I Eventually Go…”

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland and also one of the most respected traditional rulers in the country wants the selection of whoever will succeed to be peaceful and properly carried out.

The 85-year-old monarch stated this on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, at the annual Glo-sponsored Ojude Oja festival, held inside the Awujale Pavilion, in Ogun State.

Themed “The Uniqueness of Ijebu Nation”, and attended by Ogun political heavyweights like Governor Dapo Abiodun as well as former governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, the Ikubaba Yeye and Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, among other dignitaries, were equally there.

Said the Awujale, while addressing the audience: “When I eventually go, please go for a capable successor. Reject any candidate that will put Ijebuland into retrogression.

“Do not politicise the process of selecting my successor. Do not go for people that will draw Ijebu backwards.

“If the next ruling house does not present a viable candidate, please reject them and go for the next ruling house with capable candidate.

“Do not go for moneybags that will destroy the achievements Ijebuland has recorded so far. My prayer is that Ijebuland will continue to grow from strength to strength.

“God will give you direction when picking my successor; ask God to guide you,” he added, commending the age groups (Regberegbe) for their immense contributions to the successful organisation of the annual event.
