Caramelo, the popular night club in Abuja, where some strippers were recently arrested, and also allegedly raped by some Police men, using pure water satchets as condom, has been demolished.
The one storey building was reduced to rubbles by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, on Monday, May 13, 2019.
The demolition, it would be recalled, came less than a month after the club was raided.
About 34 ladies who were said to be strippers were arrested during the raid, which later became messy with allegations of sexual abuse involving some policemen who carried out the raid.
The FCTA, in their defence, claimed that the club was located in a residential area and again that the use of the building violates Abuja Master Plan.
The authorities afterwards gave the club owners a vacation notice, which obviously they couldn’t comply with. Thus the demolition.
According to Umar Shuaibu, coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, an FCTA agency, the plot where the club was sited was originally designated for a health clinic.
Adding that the club was raided following complaints from residents that both the club and their patrons were daily constituting themselves into a nuisance.
“The outcome of the surveillance revealed that the complaints are genuine and real. Please, note that the substance of these complaints include, noise nuisance from loud party music, nude/strip dancing club activities, intractable traffic challenge, resulting from uncontrolled patronage to the commercial nightclub within the residential precinct,” he had alleged.
A shocked Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said they are still investigating some Police men who allegedly raped some of the arrested strippers, using pure water satchets as condoms, after the raid.
The alleged rape had also attracted serious condemnation, especially from women rights’ bodies, some of whom even embarked on protests.
