The dreaded War Against Indiscipline crusade launched by President Muhammadu Buhari during his first coming in 1983 is back again.
It was relaunched by the Federal Government of Nigeria on Monday, August 8, 2016 in Abuja, amidst commendations and condemnations.
Now known as WAI Brigade, their brief this time covers insecurity, violence, kidnapping and other forms of social vices.
According to the Director General of National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari, the new WAI Brigade will be repositioned in this era of change for optimal performance.
Adding that, “in this era of insecurity, violence, kidnapping and other forms of social vices, the role of the WAI Brigade in civil intelligence gathering cannot be over emphasized. It is in this regard that I call on you to encourage your members across the country to redouble their vigilance in the local governments, wards and their various villages, so that we can contribute our quota towards building a secure society…
“The ills and woes that bedeviled the nation at that time are still very much with us today. That is why, when the National Orientation Agency, NOA, was established in 1983, the War Against Indiscipline, WAI Brigade was automatically drafted to be part and parcel of the Agency to fight against indiscipline, disorderly behaviour in public and private places, disobedience to traffic rules and regulations, disrespect for constituted authorities, filthy environment, bribery, corruption and other social vices,” he said.
Mixed reactions, meanwhile, have continued to trail the return of WAI. While some are saying that it will make Nigerians more disciplined as well as take many people off the labour market, others are warning that the high-handed ness associated with them previously must be avoided this time. ‘Things and times have changed. Therefore, they must very, very civil in their dealings with people this time otherwise they will be amassing more enemies for Buhari as they go about their duties, which this administration just doesn’t need”.
