The mood in the Gateway State is pensive as the civil servants have been groaning over the non-payment of last month’s salary by the government. Those who spoke to GP said it is very unusual for them not to have received bank alerts yet. They further lamented that the information at their disposal has it that as elections draw near, there is the possibility that they are going to be owed for months, which has happened in a few APC-controlled states. Meanwhile, a spokesperson to the state government told GP that the state is still expecting funds from the federal allocation, hence the slight delay, and that the government had been funding the payment hitherto by borrowing from financial institutions. The reason civil servants get their salaries on or before the 26th of the month.
