The Department of State Services (DSS) has finally confirmed that indeed it arrested Omoyele Sowore, ex-presidential candidate and founder, Sahara Reporters.
According to them, the activist was taken in because he threatened public peace with his planned protest.
It would be recalled that at about 12.15am on Saturday, August 3, 2019, some DSS operatives stormed Sowore’s Lagos residence and took him into custody. Before his arrest, he was promoting a protest tagged ‘#RevolutionNow’.
Shedding more light on their action on Sunday, August 4, Peter Afunaya, DSS spokesman, said Sowore called for a revolution, which won’t be tolerated.
He added that they would not “just sit idly and watch any individual, group and their cohorts rise and threaten the peace, unity, and constitutionalism of the country’’.
Continuing, he said, “Though there is apprehension and anxiety among citizens already, we wish to assure friends of Nigeria, and other law-abiding citizens, that there will be no revolution of any kind come Monday, August 5, 2019.
“A democratically elected government is in charge, and we cannot allow any person or group to foment chaos or fan the embers of revolution.’’
As would be expected, condemnation and commendation have been trailing the DSS action. Almost in equal proportions.
