SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv, in the absence of live sport, will be able to relive some of the greatest football matches of recent years and the history of ‘The Beautiful Game’ through the week of 22-26 April 2020.
Wednesday 22 April opens with one of the biggest surprises in the history of the UEFA European Championships, as Denmark defeated Germany 2-0 in Gothenburg, Sweden to claim their first continental title.
“I got many trophies and medals in my career but winning the European Championship has to be the biggest,” said Danish midfielder, John Jensen. “When you win and no one expects it, then it is really special. Even more so when you are playing for a country that has never won a major tournament.”
The same day also features great content for fans of African football, as the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations final between Ghana and Egypt and the SAA Supa 8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates feature.
Thursday 23 April features another great UEFA Euro clash, as a Portugal team featuring Luis Figo and Rui Costa, takes down England, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have the ultimate version of their rivalry in the final of the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League, and Los Blancos take centre stage again in ‘El Clasico’ as they take on age-old enemies Barcelona in a La Liga classic.
Friday 24 April is headlined by a Super Diski Classic, as we have the chance to relive the MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, followed by the UEFA Euro final from 1988 which saw the Netherlands defeat the USSR 2-0 in Munich – featuring one of the greatest goals in football history by the legendary Marco van Basten.
“Marco was able to score goals from impossible positions, such as that amazing volley in Euro 88 against the Soviet Union” said fellow legend Gheorghe Hagi.
The weekend opens on Saturday 25 April with Nigeria enjoying a great moment in their victory over Korea Republic in the last FIFA Women’s World Cup, followed by Liverpool’s incredible recovery to overcome Barcelona in the second leg of last season’s UEFA Champions League, as well as a Super Diski Classic which relives the Beautiful Birds of Moroka Swallows overcoming SuperSport United in the final of the MTN8.
The weekend closes out on Sunday 26 April with Real Madrid tackling Wolfsburg in a UEFA Champions League classic, Manchester City’s dramatic triumph over Queens Park Rangers in 2012 – which featured Martin Tyler’s iconic “Augeurooooo!” commentary as the Citizens claimed a first Premier League title – and Mamelodi Sundowns laying the groundwork for their CAF Champions League title in 2016 with a first-leg victory over Zamalek in the final.
