By any measure, lack of trust is a tangible cost to the society. The emotional, physical and social toll exacted by drug abuse is enormous. Long-term drug abuse can lead to permanent physical and psychological damage, in which relationships fall by the wayside. Addicts tend to neglect their health, resulting in emergency room and hospital admissions that impose a major societal cost. The pressure of finding money to feed a habit may equally drive addicts into committing crimes, forcing upward spikes in jail and prison confinements, for which taxpayers also foot the bill.
Drug abuse by young people is a problem in many countries around the world. In Nigeria, things are no different. With the advent of pop culture, social media age, there are many young people who indulge in drugs like marijuana or cocaine. These drugs, and the addiction they can cause, have several negative sociological impacts on our society. Addressing substance abuse is necessary because it has developed into a grave social issue.
Substance abuse is one of our society’s major issues. Tackling it therefore is crucial to saving the lives of thousands of drug addicts whose problems affect not only themselves, but also the ones they love and the society. Drug abuse is prevalent in all societies. User’s personal finances are held back, families are made less happy and occasionally even torn asunder by serious health issues; death or deeply negative consequences of drug abuse. Unfortunately, across the globe and throughout time, drug abuse has manifested itself in one form or another, so it appears on drug-abusing behaviour, and its effects.
Drug addiction destroys not only the abuser’s life, but affects the rest of society, too. The rest of us pay. More problems are created that affect the young. Even if we could ignore drug addiction in our country, illegal drug use encourages the drug trade (which Nigerians are known for across the border) and the resulting enforcement problems and government’s instability in other countries.
