Notable journalist, Ekerete Udoh, who has lived in New York City, United States of America, for the past 14 years has returned to Nigerian media with the News of the World newspaper. The paper hit the newsstand on Sunday, February 9, 2014. Mr. Udoh, who in the past three and half years has maintained a weekly column in Saturday Thisday appropriately titled “Diaspora”, where he analyzes politics, pop culture and society through a decidedly American prism, said he is excited to be back to Nigeria. “I have written numerous articles where I have advised my Diasporan brethren not to sneer at Nigeria from the comforts of their homes in America or Europe, but to use their skills-set to add value in our collective march toward national development, in spite of the challenges that exist here. I have preached almost to a point of sounding like a broken cord that Nigeria is going through its own Gilded Age, and those who appropriate the opportunities that exist here, like those who did, in the United States in the late 19 Century, will reap bountiful benefits and will become the barons and inheritors of old money in the next few decades. Our political culture is deepening and Nigerians are beginning to internalize the notion that democratic tradition has come to stay in Nigeria, so it’s a great moment to be back home.” Mr. Udoh who is also the publisher of the most popular newspaper by an African Diasporan in the United States, The Diasporan Star, added that he decided to come back because “I love Nigeria and I am impressed by the way Nigerians have embraced best practices in a number of aspects in our globalized space. I believe the News of the World will help deepen and extend the frontiers of media content and appeal. I believe that we at the News of the World will make a definite statement that popular culture (tabloid journalism), politics, business and other consequential discourse that are vital to our national development and cohesion can be represented and merged in a single publication that carries with it depth, flair and intellectual flourishes . We hope to report news, features and analysis in a manner that draws the reader closer to the publication, forming a bond that cannot be broken. This is an area I have mastered over the decades and hope to replicate with the News of the World. Mr. Udoh holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism from Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and a Master’s degree in International Relations and Comparative Politics from Brooklyn College, also of the City University of New York, where he was the ‘Best Graduating Student.’ He concluded that the News of the World has no connection to the now rested publication of the same title in England. “The only tie that connects is the similarity of names, which is not a new concept, as publications all over the world routinely appropriate names of existing publications and tailor their editorial niches to suit their unique platforms.” The new publication is jointly promoted by Prince Chidi Ibe, who functions as the publisher and whose NGO, Initiative for Diasporan Knowledge Transfer (IDKT), based in Abuja, has been the incubator for ideas for returnee Diasporans. Prince Ibe is also the owner of Best Western Premier Hotel, in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
