FOWLER: OGUN LEADS IN IGR NATIONWIDE
The Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Joint Tax Board (JTB), Mr. Babatunde Fowler has applauded the Ogun State Government for ranking first with 50 percent growth in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) among the states nationwide.
Fowler, who was speaking at the opening of the 135th meeting of the JTB made up of all the chairmen of Internal Revenue Services of the 36 states of the federation, said “this feat is not just achieved because of the ability of the state government but also because of the trust the citizens have in the leadership of the state.”
While revealing that the state has also been ranked fourth in the collection performance of IGR, Fowler commended the government for making the Nigerian tax system more efficient.
He urged the government not to rest on its oars and called on other state governments to brace up to achieve the joint goal.
In his keynote address, Amosun charged all stakeholders to think out of the box towards diversifying the nation’s economy, stating that “this is the way out of the present economic situation.”
Noting that this month is the first time the nation is sharing over N500bn Federal Allocation with 70 percent coming from the non-oil sector, the governor said “we should focus more on other sectors that can create wealth for our people and provide employment for our graduates and able bodied men roaming the streets.
“If we are going to ask for tax from people, we should also be able to make them see the benefit of what they are paying for, such as good roads, light, water, modern schools, security and enabling environment, to mention but a few”, he added.
