Fiery lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, just shared with his friends and followers on Facebook how he escaped death days before joining the respected league of senior advocates of Nigeria.
In a post he entitled’One Good Turn and the Value of Faithfulness’, the rights activist captured the story thus:
“April 1, 2019 was the date and I was returning from the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, having just submitted my application for elevation to the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
“In Ibadan, a young man approached me in the Court premises, seeking to ride with me back to Lagos. I readily obliged him, since I was alone in the car in the first place. It was a pleasurable drive all the way, until we got to the long bridge, very close to Lagos.
“The car had a collision with a motorbike (Okada) on the bridge and the unthinkable happened! It was like a movie. The Okada flew into the air and thereafter landed on the bonnet of the car, whilst I was struggling to control the car. By the time I stopped, there was blood and wailings.
“The passenger was seriously injured, the Okada was mangled and the car was almost a write off. The main concern was the woman, lying there helplessly on the express. The gist of this post is the heroic actions of my colleague who rode with me from Ibadan. In my confused state, I ran after the injured woman whilst my colleague immediately removed his dress, ran to the expressway, shielding the woman and also waving down cars for immediate assistance to evacuate the injured woman to the nearest hospital.
“The police arrived, trying to lecture me on why I should immediately get a towing vehicle to ferry my car and the bike to the police station. The Road Safety Marshall also arrived and then ensued a hot argument between them as to who has jurisdiction over the incident. Suddenly, a car stopped and my colleague offered to go with the woman whilst I sort out the police and FRSC, who both claimed I was under arrest and could not leave. I got a towing van to take my car and the Okada to the station.
“My mind was all along troubled concerning the injured woman. I eventually joined them in the hospital, where she had been stabilized, with no major injury. We were then referred to another hospital for specialized treatment. My colleague was still around, even pleading with me to go since he would be available to take care of all issues. We eventually got to another hospital and my colleague ran around to ensure her admission into a ward and the commencement of treatment.
“Having now settled the initial financial costs, my colleague offered to stay with the woman in the hospital. He had called his office to seek permission to attend to the lady and it was generously granted. In fact, his boss called me to sympathize with me. The woman was eventually discharged and fully restored, to the glory of God and the good work of the medical personnel.
“But the main gist of this long story is my colleague, who kept faith in visiting the woman and monitoring her treatment till the period of recovery. At the end of it all, he rendered a comprehensive statement of account of all expenses, including his own commitment, without my prompting.
“Friends and patriots, please join me in thanking GOD first, for sparing our lives and then to celebrate my colleague, OLAGBADE ADEJUGBA BENSON, ESQ, of ROTIMI WILLIAMS CHAMBERS and also TOKUNBO WILLIAMS, SAN.
“They remind me of the faithfulness of God and the value of human friendship.
“The car remained in the police station for months as I’d become drained financially, from the rigorous processes of my application for elevation. It was a challenging time indeed, but I still thank God.
“Though my life was the target, GOD rescued me and that same year, He elevated me in my profession.
“So, when bad things happen to you, when the devil makes you a target and all seem to be going the wrong way, keep on trusting GOD, who has the final say and will work out the best for you, ultimately.
“Merry Christmas to you all.”
