Self acclaimed Port-Harcourt Boy, Duncan Mighty, visited Lagos recently – and YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine’s TOKUNBO IBIKUNLE was lucky to have bumped into him. This was at the 40th birthday party of Sammie Okposo’s wife, Ozioma. They chatted briefly and the result is this…
Good evening, Duncan Mighty. What is your definition of good music?
For me, I think it’s a combination of good sound; like playing different instrumentals, harmony, lyrics, good voice, especially when you combine beautiful tones and meaningful sound together, it becomes music.
What makes good music?
A lot of flavor put together makes music. No. 1 is your talent or gift and also make sure you are good. You will also go for music training. After that, look for a good producer, go to studio, try to master one instrument. You need to put a lot of things together before you can now talk about good music. And you must be a good singer.
Tell us your area of specialty in music.
Yeah! I am an audio engineer. A professional audio engineer. I enjoy playing music, recording music and I also enjoy training other artistes, training sound engineers, mixing for other artistes as well.
What don’t you like about music?
There’s nothing I don’t like about music. But an artiste, when you have opportunities to sing, don’t use it to abuse other people. It’s very bad. I don’t like it because music is a gift given to us by God. So, we should use it to glorify God, not to abuse God or people.
As a music star, what is the costliest mistake that a musician can make?
One of the costliest mistakes a musician or a star can make is for a music star to be living a useless life. I mean, living a life that will not glorify God. After all God has done for you through music, you forget how you started and you allow the fame to take over you. You can influence people in a better way. You can change people. But the right people can not come to you because of your attitude. So, I think this is a big mistake.
As a musician, how can one succeed?
There are lots of ways you can succeed in the music industry. No. 1, you have to have a good management, you sing very well, a lot of fans, meeting the right people in the industry and you need to be humble too.
In every radio station, they are playing your music; in every party or occasion, DJs are playing your music. Why?
Just like what you are doing right now, good interviews, I mean good publicity, working with the right media team and don’t forget, right platforms. With all that put together, you will succeed as a musician.
Who are your idols? Who do you look up to in the music industry?
I aint got idols, but I got a mentor. So, when I was growing up, I was listening to many artistes. I did listen to Don Carlos, Bob Marley, Kirk Franklin, Sisco, Boys II Men. So many of them.
Which car is your favourite?
Apart from my Bently; you know it’s too big at times. But I prefer my Porshe. I feel cool when I am inside it.
