Lagos State Police Command yesterday vowed to arrest the killers of business woman and Bureau De Change owner, Mabel Mang Okafor, who was allegedly murdered by her security guard last Sunday.
The victim, 50, was found dead in the pool of her blood in her room at Close 9, House J68B, Ajah, Lekki, Lagos.
According to Owoseni who spoke to newsmen on the gruesome murder, “We are very close to getting the culprits. In order not to jeopardize what we are doing, I won’t talk much. We have a direction and we would get the suspects soon. They have no hiding place on the planet.”
A team of detectives attached to Ajah Division visited, examined and took photos of the scene immediately they were alerted.
The Police discovered that unknown persons stabbed the deceased in the stomach.
According to a source, the woman lives in the big house alone with a security man who works for her.
Although the late Mabel has other tenants in the boys’ quarters, they were unaware of her untimely death until much later.
“She was found dead in her room, stabbed in her own pool of blood; some of her money and jewelry and all phones were missing, while the gate was locked against her, with no evidence to trace the killers. We heard that her security man, from Niger Republic, is at large. The Police are still searching for her killers.” A source at VGC had said.
When we visited her house at VGC, the place was still under Police surveillance, while the street was deserted, except for a couple that was sighted in a car.
A resident who pleaded anonymity said: “I am so sad, but I commiserate with the family. Security in the country is very porous, that is why some of these bad elements could come in through our borders and get job as security guards. These illegal immigrants can come without the required papers or the necessary qualification. We Nigerians entrust our lives to everybody, even foreigners or local people who work for us; we don’t do proper scrutiny or verify before we take them into our homes.
“I spent so much money on my security gadgets/equipment, security personnel and domestic staff. But I strongly believe God is our greatest security, not men.”
A Togolese security man living around the area said: “Most rich women in VGC live alone in the huge houses without husbands or children, friends or visitors, like the dead woman. She was a very strict and no-nonsense woman.”
He added that: “The Victoria Garden City security patrol men always arrest security men or Abokis found outside people’s buildings. The authority doesn’t want to see three or more men discussing outside the buildings. They want all of us to stay at home 24-hours, which is not possible; sometimes we come out to take fresh air. However, they patrol with Hilux vehicles within the estate. If you are arrested, you would bail yourself with N40, 000, if your boss is not in town to bail you.”
