The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a notorious cyber fraudster that specializes in duping innocent Nigerians of their hard earned money through the Internet and social media platform.
The suspect, one 23-year old Sylvester Alvin Onakpobe, from Delta State, is now aiding detectives with information that would help dislodge their criminal network.
Police spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos, who made the disclosure to newsmen noted that, “The suspect was arrested for the offence of obtaining money under false pretence through internet/cyberspace.
“On 17/8/2016, the Command, through its operatives at Maroko Division, received a report from Nollywood actor, Michael Godson Ifeanyi, that some unknown persons had created a fake Facebook account using his name and photograph to defraud his fans, collecting huge amount of money under the pretence that they want to organize a film festival.
“Upon the receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Abdulmajid Isah, a Superintendent of Police (SP) and his team launched an investigation into the case; the suspect was consequently trailed and arrested while trying to collect the sum of three million, five hundred thousand naira (N3.5million) from one of the fans who resides in France.
“The suspect confessed to the crime, stating that they are a syndicate. Effort is ongoing to arrest other culprits.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Owoseni, has directed the DPO to charge the suspect to court while he warns all Internet fraudsters that the Command would do everything possible to stop their nefarious activities and ensure diligent prosecution of arrested persons”.
