Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has launched the take-off of the European Union sponsored feasible study towards using waste to generate power supply in the state.
The waste to energy project, which is in collaboration with Lafarge-Holcin Africa, will improve power supply, promote green energy and end the present practice of dumping waste in landfill or dump site.
The project will ultimately see to the establishment of thermal power plants in Ogun State with the pilot plant in Abeokuta that will generate 40 megawaths.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, who disclosed that the project is the first of its kind in Nigeria, said the feasibility study will involve field trips and house-to-house enumeration.
He solicited the cooperation of the people of the state with the team of assessors whenever they visit their homes and organisations, noting that the project is in furtherance of the delivery of democracy dividends by the Amosun government.
Oyeleye assured of government’s readiness to work hand in hand with other partners to collectively ensure the success of the project, which he stated, is aimed at bringing succour to the people of the state in the area of power supply.
Project Manager, Infrastructure Energy and Transport, European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dr. Lemiem Said Issa, who led the EU team to the event and the Managing Director, GEOCYCLE and Project Management Office, Adepeju Adebajo were both optimistic of the success of the project.
They commended the determination of the state government towards improving power supply and also eliminating environmental hazards.
