OGUN WADES INTO ROAD TRANSPORT LEADERS, MEMBERS’ ROW
The Ogun State Government has assured of peaceful resolution of the row between the leadership and members of the Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), which resulted in the two-day protest by commercial vehicle drivers within Abeokuta, the state capital, urging residents to remain calm.
General Manager of the state Parks and Garages Development Board (PAGADEB), Alhaji Ayo Ogunsolu, who restated that government is committed to maintaining peaceful co-existence among citizens, attributed the situation to communication breakdown and lack of feedback mechanism between leaders of the RTEAN and the drivers over the recent tariff increase by the state Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Ogunsolu said the leaders, who were duly informed on the modalities for the increment, said they failed to duly brief their members, who took to the streets, accusing them on insensitivity.
The PAGADEB boss, while justifying the tariff increment from N220 to N450, said government has not relented in the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure, including Lay-by parks.
He was optimistic that the misunderstanding between the RTEAN leadership and its members would be resolve amicable as series of meetings are being held to sort out the grievances by stakeholders.
Ogunsolu emphasised the need for unity among the unions, assuring of government’s readiness to work with stakeholders as partners towards moving the state forward.
