Legal luminary and human rights champion, Chief Mike Ozekhome, unknown to many, did not woo his wife, Josephine, himself.
A YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine source disclosed that one of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria’s elder sisters did the job for him. And this is how: Josephine had gone to the village (Agenebode in Edo State) to see her mother. On her way back, and while seated in a car, an elderly woman told her she would marry her, which she found very odd and shocking.
The woman asked and got her address before they disembarked. And about a month later, she came calling. While leaving, after some minutes spent talking about this and that, she asked to be seen off. All this while, she (Josephine) didn’t know that the real reason for her visit -Mike- was outside.
On getting outside, she met him inside a car and they chatted for minutes. While the chatting was on, Mike decided to come clean – by confessing that he already had a son, girlfriends, but was now looking for whom to marry. Which obviously he had found in Josephine. And instantly she took a liking to him for his sincerity and honesty and thus began their journey into matrimony.
Ozekhome, interesting, also turned out to be her first boyfriend. They went on to court for three years, before having their traditional marriage in September 1991, and while she was only 20 years old. And a Law student of the University of Jos.
Now blessed with six children -Oshoze, Esizaze, Oshoma, Osilama, Iseoghana and their last baby, they had their church wedding on December 7, 1997, at the Catholic Church of Assumption in Falomo, Lagos. A family of lawyers, the son Ozekhome had before marriage is also one and his name is Ugbekhai.
Mrs. Josephine Ozekhome who was busy with the laundry the day her husband and the elder sister visited currently works with Mike Ozekhome Chambers. Her pet name for him is Sweetheart, but he calls her Jose! They operate joint accounts, share same bedroom and don’t joke with their sex life – which the man was quoted as saying is a major part of life.
