Basically the epileptic power supply to their shopping complex. Delivering their complain letter to the Managing Director of Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Mr. Fadeye the association listed among their grievances, the non satisfactory supply of electricity. Estimated billings , lack of pre-paid meters, slow response to distress calls etc.
During a peaceful match on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc, Marina, Lagos. The Association of shop owners, SURA Shopping Complex, Lagos reiterated their displeasure with Eko Disco over their unpleasant experiences with the company over years.
Talking to Uwem Umoh of YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine, the chairman of Association of shop owners, SURA Shopping Complex, Lagos, Mrs. Bunmi Anne Ajayi stated emphatically that “electricity is key to what we do here. And for now we don’t have sufficient supply of that from Eko Disco. And now we have been able to get a company, Independent Power Project (IPP) that will be able to supply us electricity 24/7. So we are at Eko Disco to let them know that we are dissatisfied with their services and we don’t want their services any more”. She further emphasized. “We have right to regular supply of electricity, so they shouldn’t deny us of that”. Speaking further, the chairman complaining bitterly, expressed “Eko Disco leave us alone to make our choice”.
The legal adviser of the association, Bolatunji Adeotu – responded that legally they were on course because they were not in a situation of monopoly anymore. “The energy reform act is very clear. The monopoly that was in the past had been abrogated by that law. And that law specifically states that customers up to a certain level have the rights to provide their electricity, once they have one megawatt upward if your consumption is up to that level, you have the right to seek alternative power. The law allows it”.
Speaking with Otunba Wale Adeowo of the association of shop owners, he complained bitterly of this forceful marriage “the forceful marriage with Eko Electricity Distribution Company is not fruitful. And we have decided to get a new bride, which is Independent Power Project (IPP). Eko Disco does not attend to our problems nor do they give us electricity commensurate to the billing. I spend in the average of Four Hundred Thousand Naira (400,000) per month on diesel to run my business. Not to talk of generator maintenance. Yet they bring high estimated billing. With IPP, we are going to be metered. What you buy is what you use”.
Probing further, it was realized that the SURA Shopping Complex has already been disconnected of power supply by the Eko Disco and effort to speak with management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company has not yielded positive result yet.
