The funeral arrangements for the iconic soldier, late Conrad Dibia Nwawo NA/10, who died at the age of 93 on Saturday, February 27, 2016, has been confirmed by the family through the Burial Planning Committee.
In a statement by the Burial Committee Chairman, Group Capt. Mike Amanyeiwe (Rtd.), his body will be laid to rest at his hometown, Akwubili, Ogbe-Obi Quarters, Onicha-Olona in Delta State on Friday, 27th May, 2016, after funeral service at St. Peters Anglican Church, Onicha-Olona from 9.00am.
CD Nwawo (MC.) was one of the first generation soldiers of the Nigerian Army. He was Nigeria’s tenth commissioned Army Officer (NA/10) having joined on December 1, 1950 when it was called the West African Frontier Force and subsequently, commissioned as a second Lieutenant, on May 28, 1954, at Ettenhall, UK.
He served in various capacity including; Defence Attaché to Nigerian High Commission in United Kingdom, member of Nigerian Contingent to the United Nations’ Peace Keeping Mission in Congo. He was also the Commander, 4th Area Command, Benin-City before the Nigerian Civil War.
A proud recipient of many awards, including the prestigious Military Cross (MC), awarded by Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England; a meritorious award conferred on him and late Adekunle Fajuyi so far in the history of the Nigerian Army. He is survived by his wife and a son.
The family invites friends, associates and sympathizers to the burial ceremony, which includes a Day of Tributes and Book Presentation, titled “The Facts AS I Saw Them” – my memoir on Nigerian Civil War, written by Conrad Dibia Nwawo; in Asaba, Delta State on Thursday, May 26, at 10.00am.
Followed by a Christian Wake Keep at his residence in Onicha-Olona by 6pm, while the thanksgiving service will take place on Sunday, May 29, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Onicha -OLona in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State at 10.00am.
